The UAB Systems Pharmacology AI Research Center (SPARC) invites multidisciplinary teams to move a promising idea from mechanism toward an experimentally testable therapy. Three teams each receive up to $20,000 in scoped SPARC drug-discovery services — commitments of expertise, not cash.

The Challenge

From biological insight to an asset you can validate.

CollaboFest is designed to move promising research — a mechanism, a clinical observation, an accessible dataset — toward an experimentally testable therapeutic solution, generating pilot evidence for grants, publications, partnerships, and potential UAB intellectual property. Teams submit a concise three-page proposal through the CollaboFest portal.

What the $20,000 includes

An idea-generating menu, not a fixed package.

Each selected project receives a jointly defined scope of SPARC services valued at up to $20,000. A practical project usually emphasizes one primary service module and a few supporting analyses. During scoping, SPARC and the team agree on the question, inputs, deliverables, validation handoff, and stopping point.

Generally outside the award

Unless explicitly scoped, awards do not cover compound synthesis or purchase, wet-lab experiments, animal studies, clinical recruitment, IRB or regulatory submissions, patent fees, or third-party costs. SPARC can help design and connect these downstream activities.

Every team needs a scientific home in the network — but the rest of your team can come from anywhere.

Core eligibility requirement

At least one co-investigator from UAB or the CCTS Partner Network

Each team must include a co-investigator whose primary institutional affiliation is either the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) or an institution in the UAB-led Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Partner Network. Additional members may come from other institutions or organizations, subject to program requirements.

Who should form a team

Complementary assets beyond informatics.

  • Scientific or clinical ownershipA disease-mechanism study, evidence-supported target shortlist, or clinical expertise, cohorts, and endpoints.
  • An accessible dataset or validation platformA unique patient-cohort or experimental dataset, distinctive assay, organoid, or new approach methodology (NAM).
  • Translational & development reachMedicinal chemistry, biologics, pharmacology, regulatory, IP, or a commercial / external translational partner.
  • Committed resourcesExisting external funding or committed resources related to the proposed program. No team is expected to hold every asset.
The Three-Page Proposal

Seven things every proposal should make clear.

The most useful proposals name the decision to be made, the evidence already available, the SPARC work needed, the intended deliverable, and the experiment or translational step that follows.

The disease problem or critical translational barrier.

Central hypothesis

The target, mechanism, intervention, or patient-selection concept to test.

Key publications, preliminary findings, clinical observations, and data.

The decision, prediction, design, or translational asset you want to produce.

The specific services needed — and why they are essential.

Validation plan & next milestone

A feasible experimental, computational, clinical, or translational test of the output — and how success supports a grant, manuscript, invention disclosure, licensing opportunity, startup, partnership, or clinical study. Candidate-generating projects should identify a wet-lab validation route.

How proposals are reviewed

Agent-assisted analysis. Human judgment decides.

SPARC uses automated, agent-assisted reviews as decision support to keep preliminary assessment consistent — they do not independently select winners. A panel of judges reviews the evidence and recommends the final awards.

Judges represent SPARC, the UAB Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (DBIDS), the Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation, Southern Research, and the UAB-led CCTS. Criteria for the Grand Prize will be announced separately.

What teams ask most.

Is the award cash?

No. Each of the three awards is up to $20,000 in scoped, in-kind SPARC drug-discovery services — commitments of expertise and computation, not a cash grant. SPARC and each selected team jointly define the scope, deliverables, responsibilities, milestones, and timeline.

Who has to be on the team?

What do we submit, and how?

Submission is through the designated CollaboFest collaboration portal and is required for all contestants.

What does the award not cover?

Unless specifically included in the final scope, awards should not be assumed to cover compound synthesis or purchase, wet-lab experiments, animal studies, clinical recruitment, IRB or regulatory submissions, patent expenses, or third-party fees. Teams should identify relevant background IP, prior disclosures, restricted data, and potential inventorship considerations. Data access, privacy, security, publication, authorship, and IP matters follow applicable UAB policies and project-specific agreements.
